The last few weeks have been some of the busiest I can remember. Two new companies launched from Cheyenne within about a week of each other, I sat down for a long conversation on a podcast, and a few pieces of writing went out that capture ideas I care about. I want to gather all of it in one place, both to keep a record and to share it with anyone who has been following along.
Wyco Builders Opened Its Yard in Cheyenne
On September 24, I announced the launch of Wyco Builders, a heavy equipment rental company operating from a yard in Cheyenne. Wyco rents excavators, loaders, dozers, lifts, trucks, trailers and the smaller equipment that keeps a job site moving, and it delivers along the Interstate 25 corridor to places like Fort Collins, Greeley, Denver, Laramie and Casper.
Having equipment close to the job matters for crews working on tight schedules, and a local yard shortens the distance between a request and a delivery. The Wyco Builders launch announcement covers the full equipment list and service area for anyone who wants the details.
Trade Winds Freight Started Taking Bookings
A week later, on October 1, Trade Winds Freight launched as a multimodal freight carrier headquartered here in Cheyenne. It moves cargo by ocean, air, long-haul truck and autonomous cargo drone, and it plans, prices and tracks each shipment under one operator.
The idea behind it is simple to say and hard to do well. Most shipping problems happen at the points where cargo and information pass from one company to the next, so Trade Winds was built to reduce those handoffs and give customers the same view of their shipment that the people moving it have. The Trade Winds Freight launch lays out the trade lanes, which connect the Americas with Europe, the Balkans, Africa, India and Asia.
Why I Keep Launching New Ventures in Cheyenne
Atlantic Tech is headquartered in Cheyenne, and both new companies are based here too. People sometimes ask why I keep starting new ventures in Cheyenne instead of moving to a bigger market. The honest answer is that this community has been good to me, and I would rather add to it than leave it.
Every new company that opens here creates work, relationships and reasons for talented people to stay. That matters to me as much as any revenue figure.
A Conversation on the Social 333 Podcast
I also joined Chris Bentley on the Social 333 Podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about data, marketing, AI and what it has taken to build Atlantic Tech. We talked about how I went from driving for Lyft to founding the company in 2020. Learning business online between rides was where all of it started, and I still approach every new venture as a student first.
Chris asked good questions, and a few of the themes from that conversation, like finding the right people to grow with and choosing which clients to work with, turned into journal entries of their own this fall.
Recent Writing Worth Revisiting
Two pieces published elsewhere this season capture ideas I return to often. The first explains why I keep Crime and Punishment as a warning about how easily reasonable-sounding steps can lead somewhere they should not. I find that lesson useful in business, where small shortcuts can become habits before anyone notices.
The second made the case that hustle culture is terrible advice for young founders. Sustainable effort and careful decisions build more than burnout ever has, and I want young founders to hear that early.
What Has Stayed the Same
New ventures can make it look like everything is changing at once. The work underneath has stayed steady. I still spend most of my time thinking about the people on our teams, the clients we serve and whether each decision fits who we want to be. Finding people to grow with has guided every launch so far, and it will guide the next ones too.
There will be more to share as Wyco Builders and Trade Winds Freight find their footing. For now, I am grateful for everyone who has helped get them off the ground, and for the Cheyenne community that keeps giving these ideas a place to grow.
